The Review

Invincible is a beautiful piece of historical fiction. Gemma Lawrence writes with the kind of care that lets a reader feel the weight of a period long gone, and the result is a novel that reads as both vivid and humane.

What struck me most is the very human element this book brings to the brutal reality of warfare and death. Where lesser treatments of the subject could stay distant, Lawrence keeps her characters close, and their fear, loyalty, and grief become the true center of the story.

That approach is a large part of why the book stays with you. The historical detail is present, but it serves the people living inside it rather than the other way around.

Final Thoughts

If you enjoy historical fiction that puts character first, this is an easy recommendation. Invincible manages to be moving without ever losing sight of the reality it is describing, and it comes highly recommended.
