I read and reviewed author F.L. Ruby’s novel Sean Roberts in the summer of 2018. I was so very impressed with his writing. That is why he is one of my favorite authors and has earned a position on my Author Spotlight page! Please see his interview and upcoming work below.
1. What inspired you to write a book?
I’ve wanted to write a novel for some time. I’ve always had good ideas for stories pop into my head but didn’t write them down. My inspiration grew after I had written my dissertation for my doctorate (Ed.D.) at Columbia University. I loved the process and decided I would use my writing/research experience to create my own story.
2. What does your typical writing day look like?
I wrote Sean Roberts in the early morning, late evening, and sometimes all day on the weekends. I often got up at 3:00 AM and put a pot of coffee on and started writing whatever came into my head. Same strategy during the weekends—a brain dump, which came out of my head faster than I could write it down. I used an old-school tablet first and then transferred it to a laptop. I like the feel of a pen and paper where I can cross out words and add arrows to thoughts connected to a sentence or paragraph. I wrote a lot in my backyard, an average suburban backyard that turned into the Caribbean or the shores of Ireland. I also like to write in coffee shops and/or quaint bars/restaurants. My favorite is an Irish Pub called Barry’s Old School Irish.
3. Do you have a favorite book you have written?
Sean Roberts is my debut novel.
4. What advice would you give to a new writer just starting out?
Never give up. Have fun and enjoy the process. If you figure out you love to write you’re blessed. Learn from feedback (good and bad). Use it as motivation. No feedback is feedback too. It motivated me to persevere.
5. Are you on social media and can your readers interact with you?
I am on Twitter (FLRuby2), Facebook (F.L. Ruby), and Instagram (f.l.ruby). FLRuby.com is my website. I love to interact with readers and will respond ASAP. Check out my website and let’s start a dialogue. I have book club questions that need answers!
6. How do you handle literary criticism?
It motivates me to work harder and it encourages me to make the story better. My goal with Sean Roberts was to make each chapter better. If I received criticism on a particular chapter (and I certainly did), I was determined to make that chapter the best one.
7. Please describe your writing space?
As I mentioned in question two, I like to alternate where I write. I like to write in public places, preferably small cafes or pubs. But I also like to write privately at home. I’ve found I can write just about anywhere. I can easily escape into my own world.
8. Who is your own favorite author? Dead or alive.
It’s hard to say because there are so many great authors. Charles Dickens was my very first favorite. We read Great Expectations in English class and I was immediately hooked. I love what J.K. Rowling has done with Harry Potter.
9. What is the most helpful thing to you in this industry?
It’s been great to correspond with other authors. I’ve realized we’re all rooting for each other. Book reviews have been the most helpful, especially from Leonard Tillerman’s website. He also provides good advice for writers.
10. If you had to describe yourself in 3 words…what would they be?
Determined, appreciative, lucky.
I am currently working on a sequel to Sean Roberts. But I also can’t help working on a second project, one that I can’t get out of my head even while I write the sequel. I’m not sure of the title yet, but it’s something I feel I have to write. The only thing I can say about it is…it’s filled with human emotion. I felt the same way with Sean Roberts. I didn’t plan to write it the way it turned out, it just happened that way. I love to write so I guess I’m blessed.
